Arthur Lewis was born in Russia in 1877 and emigrated first to London, and then to Northumberland. Following the outbreak of the Great War he attested for the Yorkshire Regiment, before transferring to the Durham Light Infantry on 1 November 1916; to the South Staffordshire Regiment on 19 May 1917; and to the Royal Flying Corps on 28 December 1917. He served during the Great War on the Western Front with the Royal Flying Corps and latterly with the Royal Air Force from 9 March 1918. Transferring to the Royal Air Force Reserve on 30 March 1919, he was discharged on 30 April 1920.

Roy Justin Lester was born in Carleton, Ontario, on 26 August 1892, and was commissioned temporary Second Lieutenant in the Royal Air Force on 22 August 1918. He arrived in England on 11 September 1918, and was posted to No. 34 Training Depot Station on 7 November 1918, before transferring to the Unemployed List on 9 April 1919. Only entitled to the British War Medal.
