Walter Frederick Todd was a native of Glasgow, and he served as a Sergeant with the 7th (Blythswood) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry (T.F.) prior to the Great War. Todd was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the same battalion, 1 May 1915, and initially served during the Great War in the Gallipoli theatre of war from 3 July 1915. He subsequently advanced to Captain and transferred to the 2nd Battalion, before finally transferring to the Scottish Rifles.
