John Brothers was born in Bisham, Berkshire, in 1864 and attested for the Imperial Yeomanry at Cockspur Street, London on 1 February 1901, having previously served for 12 years with the Royal Marines. He served with the 80th (2nd Sharpshooters) Company, 21st Battalion Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa during the Boer War from 14 March 1901 to 10 August 1902, and was discharged at Aldershot on 16 August 1902, after 1 year and 197 days’ service.
