George Swan was born in Alnwick, Northumberland, in 1872 and attested for the Imperial Yeomanry at Newcastle-upon-Tyne on 6 February 1901. He served with the 14th (Northumberland) Company, 5th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry in South Africa during the Boer War from 10 March 1901 to 8 September 1902, and was promoted Corporal on 17 August 1901. He was discharged at Aldershot on 15 September 1902, after 1 year and 265 days’ service.
