Walter Ashton James was born in 1855, and enlisted as a Private in the Naauwpoort Town Guard on 1 July 1901. He was later appointed a Lieutenant in the Naauwpoort District Mounted Troops.

The Naauwpoort District Mounted Troops consisted of a Captain and five Lieutenants. Approximately 128 medals awarded to the unit.
