John Ward joined up with the 1/13th Foot in Natal, South Africa, on 14 January 1875. He was part of a draft, presumably from England, sent out from the 36th Brigade Depot which had been established at Taunton to facilitate recruitment into the regiment as part of the Cardwell reforms of 1873.
