William Tungate was born in Blandford, Dorset, in 1861 and enlisted in the Royal Marines at Birmingham on 15 November 1882. Posted to H.M.S. Ranger, he served aboard her as part of the 2nd Naval Brigade engaged with the troops in the operations in Burma between 14 November 1885 and 30 April 1887. Promoted Corporal on 29 July 1891, he was discharged on 14 November 1894, after 12 years’ service.
