The Kaffir War medal awarded to Lieutenant William Squirl, 91st Regiment, who had previously fought with the Austrian Army under Marshal Radetzki during the Italian War of Independence 1848-49

William Squirl purchased an Ensigncy in the 91st Regiment on 11 May 1849, and became Lieutenant, also by purchase, on 8 July 1851. He was promoted to Captain on 5 March 1858. Captain Squirl served as a Lieutenant in the Austrian Army under Marshal Radetzki in 1848-49, and was present at the battles of Mortara and Novara. He afterwards served with the 91st Regiment in the Kaffir War of 1850-53 (Medal). He was placed on half-pay on 12 June 1869.
