B.E.M. London Gazette 9 January 1942:
‘During an air raid houses were demolished by high explosive bombs and the wreckage caught fire. Constable John Jefferson directed rescue operations and, regardless of the danger from falling masonry, succeeded in extricating four persons from the debris. Later, he helped to release a boy who was trapped between the collapsed floors of a damaged house. The Constable showed courage and initiative.’
