Captain Sutton’s Rifle Company Medal 1807, a circular engraved medal with multi-stepped border, 64mm, silver (hallmarks for London 1806), the obverse featuring a Rifleman firing at a target, with landscape behind, ‘Captn. Sutton’s Rifle Company.’ above, the reverse inscribed ‘Prize Medal 13 July 1807. No. 2.’, with small ring suspension, good very fine £160-200

Referenced in Balmer, V.895.
The ‘No. 1 Prize Medal June 1806’ was sold as part of the Colonel Murray Collection at Sotheby’s in 1926.

Captain Sutton’s Rifle Company was a company of the Loyal Ongar Hundred Volunteers, but being raised and maintained by a subscription amongst the local gentry at no cost to the Exchequer, they chose to remain semi-independent by adopting the name of their commanding officer.
One of their officers made a celebrated 1,000 Guinea wager that he could trundle a hoop from London to Ongar within a specified time. He lost the wager when his hoop ran into a muddy road which slowed his progress.

Note: Owing to the uncertainty that exists with the original provenance and manufacture of some early engraved Volunteer Medals, this lot is sold as viewed.
