The Reverend Alan Manson Nelson was ordained into the Church of Scotland and was appointed to the Bengal Ecclesiastical Department in 1903. He was Commissioned Junior Chaplain on 24 March 1904, and was attached to the 2nd Battalion Gordon Highlanders at Cawnpore. Promoted Senior Chaplain on 24 March 1914, he served during the Great War, and was appointed Presidency Senior Chaplain, Church of Scotland, in Lahore on 1 July 1921. He was posted on leave from the Indian Army on 18 October 1922, and retired in 1924.

Anne Louis Nelson, née Merrylees, served during the Great War in France as an Orderly with Dr Elsie Inglis’ Unit (Scottish Women’s Hospital) at Royaumont from 31 August 1915 to 15 September 1917 (not entitled to a 1914-15 Star). For her work in France, under the auspices of the French Red Cross, she was awarded the Medal of Honour in bronze; as with the majority of such awards it was not Gazetted. After the War she married the Reverend A. M. Nelson, and worked at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in London as a masseuse for 20 years.
