John Stewart was born in Paisley, Renfrewshire, and attested for the 1st/ 6th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (Territorial Force) on 5 August 1914. He served during the Great War on the Western Front, and was killed in action on 20 April 1916. He is buried in Maroeuil British Cemetery, France.
