Harry Whittaker was born on 27 May 1888 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 14 June 1905. He was advanced Able Seaman on 3 August 1913, and transferred to the Royal Naval Air Service on 1 February 1915. He was appointed Petty Officer Mechanic on 1 August 1915, and Chief Petty Officer Mechanic 3rd Class on 1 March 1916, before transferring to the Royal Air Force on their establishment on 1 April 1918. He was reclassified Flight Sergeant on 1 January 1919, and stayed in that rank until his discharge in 1927.
