Cromwell, Lord-General, 1650, a later striking (c.1800?) of the medal in silver by T. Simon, from rusted die, bust in high relief facing three-quarters right in collar, armour and mantle, uniface, 33 x 29mm, 28.81g (Lessen Group E; MI 388/7; E 180). Well struck on a thick flan with the usual die flaws at top and bottom, extremely fine with attractive olive tone (£150-180)

The die is thought to have broken before any medals could be struck from it, a view supported by the absence of a reverse. It is believed to have been taken to Holland in 1720 where re-strikes in gold, silver and copper were produced, normally on round flans. Oval strikings are considered to have been made later (see M.
