Henry VI (First reign, 1422-1461), Leaf-Trefoil/Leaf-Mascle issue mule, Halfgroat, Calais, mm. cross V, leaf on breast, trefoils by neck, trefoil after gra, rev. saltire after vil, mascle before and double saltire after la, double saltire before sie, 1.94g/6h (DIG 1; Stewartby p.307; N –; S 1911B). Very fine; probably the only known specimen £800-1,000

Provenance: From the Reigate Brokes Road (Surrey) Hoard, 1990; Glendining Auction, 8 December 1992, lot unknown; SNC April 1994 (2165) and p.106

The last surviving mint account for Calais covers the period December 1439 to April 1441, during which only a small amount of silver was struck, presumably including the present coin. Although the Calais mint continues to be mentioned in documents for a number of years, no more accounts are known and no coins exist which could be attributed to the period after
c. 1440
