Edward Costigan was born in Maryborough, co. Laois, Ireland, in 1864, and attested for the Royal Artillery at Dublin on 28 May 1885. He served with the Royal Field Artillery in India from October 1885 until February 1895, and then in South Africa during the Boer War from 15 May 1901 until 6 October 1902. He retuned to India and served there until February 1904, before taking his discharge on 31 May 1904, after 19 years and 3 days’ service.
