Defective Medals: Military General Service 1793-1814, disc only, pinned at 12 and 6 o’clock into silver swivel mount with pin brooch for wearing (James McFarlane, 61st Foot.) correctly impressed naming, nearly very fine £200-300

James McFarlane was born in the Parish of Cauldress, Dunbarton, and served in the Dunbarton Fencibles from 10 May 1794 to 5 October 1802. Shortly afterwards, on 30 November 1802, he joined the Royal Artillery and served with them until 24 July 1803. He joined the 61st Foot on 10 September 1803, and was discharged from that regiment at Newry in February 1815, in consequence of ‘Wound thro left ancle at Salamanca 22nd July 1812; do. thro both thighs at Anoa (?) 10th Novr. 1813 [Nivelle] and worn out in service.’ His discharge papers carry the following annotation by Lieutenant-Colonel Wm. Carr Royall, 61st Foot: ‘I further certify that this man is a brave soldier although addicted to drunkenness.’ James McFarlane received the M.G.S. medal with a clasp for Salamanca and is thought to have died in Scotland in 1848. Sold with copied discharge papers.
