Robert Chamberlain was born in Castle Cary, Somerset, in May 1846. He served with the 1st Somerset Militia prior to attesting for the Royal Marines in May 1864. He served as part of the Royal Marine complement for H.M.S. Star, 1866-1868, and was discharged 12 June 1885, having served 21 years with the Corps.
