Richard Holman was born in Bideford, Devon, in February 1879. He attested for the Royal Marines at Barnstaple, in September 1896. His service included with H.M. ships Diana, November 1908 - February 1911 and the London, February 1914 - October 1916 (during which time she was part of the 5th Battle Squadron which escorted the B.E.F. across the Channel, and later as part of the Dardenelles Squadron which supported the main landings at Gaba Tepe and Anzac Cove).

Holman transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserve in February 1918 (awarded L.S. & G.C. in January 1925). He was discharged, 19 February 1929, having attained the age of 50. He died in April 1931.
