Hugh William Rose was born on 8 September 1874, and attested for the Royal Army Medical Corps in December 1898. He served in the ranks for 16 years and 33 days, being advanced to Warrant Officer Class I in January 1915. Appointed Quarter Master and Lieutenant on 13 April 1915, he served during the Great War in Egypt from 20 May 1915 until 18 March 1916, and with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force from 19 March 1916 until 31 October 1918, and was Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 6 July 1917). Promoted Captain on 13 April 1918, he subsequently served with the Army of the Rhine from 1919-25, and then at the School of Hygiene, Aldershot, from 1926-28.
