John Lewis was born in Ilminster, Somerset, in 1839, and attested for the 30th Foot at Bristol on 15 September 1857. Awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, together with a gratuity of £5, in November 1876, he was discharged on 23 March 1880 after 22 years and 191 days’ service, his only overseas service being 7 years and 311 days spent in Canada.
