Ewart Oswald Norris was born in Cheltenham in August 1899. He entered the Royal Naval Air Service as Boy Mechanic, in September 1916, and was posted to R.N.A.S. Felixstowe (Seaplane Station), 23 August 1917. He was promoted Sergeant Mechanic in April 1918, and reclassified as Sergeant Wireless Observer upon his transfer to the Royal Air Force. He transferred to the R.A.F. Reserve in April 1920.

Norris’ service papers give a ‘Duplicate’ D.F.M. being issued in December 1924.
