Arctic Medal 1818-55 (Thos, Horn) neatly engraved in running script on bottom edge, very fine £1000-1200

Thomas Horn served as Captain of the Forecastle on the North Star on the voyage of 1849-50 under James Saunders, Master Commanding, in search of Sir John Franklin’s expedition.

Thomas Horn was born in Plymouth, Devon, on 10 November 1814. He first entered the Navy aboard H.M.S. Portland on 7 May 1836, rated as an Able Seaman which suggests that he came from the merchant service. He afterwards served in Talbot, June 1838 to April 1842; Camperdown, May 1842 to July 1844; Queen, July 1844 to January 1845; Trafalgar, February 1845 to June 1848; Sheerness Dock Yard, as Seaman Rigger, July 1848 to March 1849; North Star, as Captain of the Forecastle, 31 March 1849 to 10 October 1850; Trafalgar, October 1850 to July 1851; and finally Orion until discharged to Pension on 7 September 1857 as a Chief Quarter-Master. Sold with copied record of service and other research.
