James Henry Jacques was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire, in 1872 and attested for the York and Lancaster Regiment at Pontefract on 18 July 1891, having previously served in the Regiment's 3rd (Militia) Battalion. Posted to the 1st Battalion, he served in South Africa, Mauritius, and India from June 1893 to February 1899, and transferred to the Army Reserve on 5 February 1899. He was recalled to the Colours on the outbreak of the Boer War, and was wounded in Natal, 22 February 1900. Jacques was one of 14 men of the regiment wounded in action on that day at Hedge Hill, on the north bank of the Tugela River, prior to the final relief of Ladysmith. He was discharged on 17 July 1903.

Jacques re-enlisted on the outbreak of the Great War in the Army Ordnance Corps on 15 October 1914, and was promoted Armourer Staff Sergeant. He served with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force from 27 September 1915, and transferred to Class ‘Z’ Reserve on 2 March 1919.
