Three: Quartermaster Arthur Hobbs, Royal Navy

Baltic 1854-55, unnamed as issued; Ashantee 1873-74, no clasp (A. Hobbs, Py. Offr. 1 Cl: H.M.S. Coquette. 73-74); Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., V.R., narrow suspension (Arthr. Hobbs Qr Mr H.M.S. Rl. Adelaide) engraved naming, light contact marks, otherwise good very fine (3) £400-460

Arthur Hobbs was born at Launceston, Cornwall, on 30 June 1839, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class aboard H.M.S. Royal William on 20 June 1854. He served in the Baltic aboard H.M.S. Gorgon, advancing to Boy 1st Class in May 1856, and as a Petty Officer 1st Class aboard H.M.S. Coquette in the Ashantee campaign of 1873-74. He received his L.S. & G.C. medal aboard H.M.S. Royal Adelaide on 14 August 1875, and was Shore Pensioned on 6 August 1877. He served thereafter as an Able Seaman on the books of H.M.S. Indus, becoming P.O. 2nd Class in May 1891. He transferred to Vivid I in October 1891, was advanced to P.O. 1st Class (Pensioner) in May 1894, and was finally discharged on 30 June 1899 having reached 60 years of age.
