A Great War 1916 ‘Battle of the Somme’ M.M. awarded to Private J. Hoare, East Surrey Regiment, killed in action on the first day of the Battle of Cambrai, 20 November 1917

James Hoare was born in Brixton, Surrey, and attested for the East Surrey Regiment at Camberwell, Surrey. He served with the 7th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front, and according to the Regimental History was awarded the Military Medal for the attack on Ovillers on 3 July 1916, during the Battle of the Somme. Promoted Corporal, he was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of Cambrai on 20 November 1917, on which date the Battalion was involved in the attack on the Hindenburg Line. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, France.
