Hubert Raynes was born in Chilcompton, Bath, Somerset, and attested for the Somerset Light Infantry in 1887, transferring to the Army Reserve in 1894. Recalled to the Colours for service in South Africa, he served with the 2nd Battalion during the Boer War, and was discharged at Taunton after 16 years’ service on 11 September 1903. He died on 20 November 1920.
