Robert Ogilvie Gardner was born in Bengal on 30 August 1815, son of Surgeon Gilbert Ogilvie Gardner, Bengal Establishment. He was educated at Edinburgh Military and Naval Academy 1828-29 and at Addiscombe 1830-32. Ensign 50th Madras N.I., 24 November 1832; Lieutenant, 2 August 1836; Captain, 27 July 1845; Assistant Commissary General, European Staff Corps, 2 September 1855; Brevet Major, 8 June 1856; retired as Lieutenant-Colonel, 25 September 1861; died on 16 April 1876.
