James Thomas Wright was born in London, England, and prior to the Great War served with the Hertfordshire Rifles, 1890-1893, the Isle of Wight Artillery, 1893-1899, and the Cape Garrison Artillery, 1900-1903. He attested for Nairobi Howitzer Battery in October 1915, and served with them until discharged ‘Medically Unfit’, 23 January 1917 (entitled to 1914-15 Star).
