Arthur Matthews was born at Ladywood, Birmingham, and attested there for the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. He transferred to the Wiltshire Regiment, and served during the Great War with the 7th Battalion. He was killed in action on the Western Front on 7 October 1918, and is buried in Guizancourt Farm Cemetery, France.
