William Harding was born on 29 August 1886, in Islington, London, and joined the Royal Navy in 1906. He served during the Great War as Stoker Petty Officer in H.M.S. Woolwich, from 6 March 1914 to 24 May 1916; as Stoker Petty Officer in H.M.S. Dido from 25 May 1916 to 5 November 1916; and in HMS Sandhurst from 2 December 1916 to 31 May 1918. He was promoted Mechanician in 1920 when serving in H.M.S. Queen Elizabeth and was awarded his Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 19 February 1921. He was invalided out of the service in 1926.
