Stanley Percival Herbert was born in Islington, London, on 20 September 1891, and joined the Royal Marine Light Infantry on 1 May 1909. Promoted Corporal on 14 September 1913, Sergeant on 7 January 1917, and Colour Sergeant on 25 October 1923, he was awarded his Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 29 November 1924, and was discharged on the termination of his second period of engagement on 19 September 1930.
