Ernest Smith was born in Battersea, London, in 1892, and attested in the Special Reserve, Royal Sussex Regiment on 19 January 1909 at Kingston, Surrey. He served with 2nd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment during the Great War on the Western Front from 21 August 1914. He also served with 608th Employment Company, Labour Corps.
