Joseph Henry Bateman was born in 1884, in Portfield, near Oving, West Sussex, and attested for the 1st Royal Dragoons at Chichester in 1901, stating that he was a labourer and aged 18. He served with his regiment in India and South Africa, and in 1912 was a member of the winning 'A' Squadron football team, which won the inter-squadron football cup.

Bateman accompanied his regiment to France on 8 October 1914 and served during the Great War on the Western Front until May 1917, when he was invalided with phlebitis and sent to England, where he continued his service. Awarded his Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in March 1920 , he was discharged in October 1922 at Canterbury, his character was described as 'Exemplary’. A member of the 1st Royal Dragoons Old Comrades Association, he is noted in the regimental journal of April 1930 as living in Bognor Regis, and was still residing there in 1946.
