Henry Haywood was born at Epsom, Surrey, on 27 April 1871, and enlisted in the Chatham Division, Royal Marines Light Infantry, on 27 April 1889, in London. He was discharged, limited engagement, on 14 June 1901; re-enrolled in the Royal Fleet Reserve in 1906, and again in 1912. He served with the Royal Marine Brigade during the Great War on the Western Front from 12 September 1914 to 19 August 1916, in action at Dunkirk between 20 September 1914 to 2 October 1914, and the Defence of Antwerp between 3 and 9 October 1914. He passed the searchlight course on 21 September 1916 and served on H.M.S. Crescent (Cromarty) from 1 December 1916 to 30 January 1919. He was demobilized on 6 March 1919 and was paid a War Gratuity of £27 and a Royal Fleet Reserve War Gratuity of £50.
