D.C.M. London Gazette 21 October 1918: ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He volunteered on no less than eleven occasions in one month to conduct parties carrying rations and supplies over a very much exposed area that was being heavily shelled by the enemy, to gun emplacements in the front line. The fine example of courage and devotion to duty of this warrant officer had an excellent effect on the N.C.O.s and men of his company.’

John Percy Batey served previously with the Middlesex Regiment (No. 1331). He landed in France on 17 August 1915 and was killed or died on 9 April 1918, aged 29. The son of Robert and Georgina Batey, of Stockport, Cheshire, he is commemorated by name on the Ploegsteert Memorial.
