Henry James Day was commissioned Ensign, 99th Foot, in December 1854, and advanced to Lieutenant in October 1857. He served as Adjutant for the Regiment during the China War 1857-60, and was present at the actions of Chang-kin-wan, Paliatchow and the surrender of Pekin in 1860. He was promoted Captain in January 1864.
