Alfred Ison enlisted for the 47th Foot at Cambridge, in June 1848. He served as servant to Captain Henry Meade Hamilton, 47th Foot, during the Crimean War. The latter was a Deputy Assistant Quarter Master General. Ison was sent Sick to Scutari, 22 December 1854. He died at Scutari, 2 February 1855.
