William Henry McLaughlin served during the Second World War with the Royal Air Force and was promoted Flight Sergeant. He was granted a temporary commission as Pilot Officer on 20 April 1944, and was promoted a War Substantive Flying Officer on 20 October 1944, serving in the Technical Branch. Appointed to a short service commission, he was promoted Flight Lieutenant on 20 October 1947, before he retired on medical grounds on 9 March 1956.
