Frederick Martin was born at Springbourne, Hampshire, and attested for the Dorsetshire Regiment at Dorchester, Dorset. Advanced Sergeant, he served with the 1st Battalion during the Great War, and was killed in action on the Western Front on 2 May 1915. On this day the Battalion was subjected to a heavy gas attack, at Hill 60, near St. Julien, during the Battle of Ypres, and 71 men of the Battalion were killed on this day, with many more following on subsequent days. Martin is buried in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
