James Wilson was born in Edinburgh in 1859 and served during the Great War in the Mercantile Marine, whilst living in Liverpool. He was killed in action when the 774 ton cargo ship the S.S. Hare, en route from Manchester to Dublin, was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine in the Irish Sea 13 miles east of Howth Head. The Captain survived, but the crew of 12 went down with the ship. Wilson is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial.
