Henry Bentley was born in Deptford, Kent, in 1875, and attested for the Royal West Kent Regiment at Maidstone, Kent, on 18 February 1897. He served with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa, and with the 8th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 30 August 1915. He subsequently transferred to the Bedfordshire Regiment.
