Charles Simpson was born in Aldershot, Hampshire, a miner by trade he attested for the Northumberland Fusiliers at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, in December 1886. He advanced to Sergeant in June 1892, and served with the 1st Battalion in the Sudan, January 1898 - October 1898, and in South Africa September 1899 - April 1903 (entitled to QSA with ‘Belmont’, ‘Modder River’, ‘Orange Free State’ and ‘Transvaal’ clasps and KSA with two clasps). He advanced to Colour Sergeant in April 1904, and served in India, February 1906 - January 1909 (entitled IGS 1895-1908, with ‘North West Frontier 1908’ clasp). He was posted to the 7th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers, in December 1908, and was discharged in December the following year, having served 23 years with the Colours.
