Walter Atkinson was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, and attested for the West Yorkshire Regiment at York, in December 1899. He served with the 2nd Battalion during the Second Boer War, 8 June 1900 - 21 March 1902. He was discharged 14 December 1911, having served 12 years with the Colours.
