George Clarkson was born at Kilwinning, Ayrshire, in 1872 and attested for the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders at Stirling on 7 January 1893. He deserted on 3 April 1894, but rejoined a year later on 7 April 1895. He went with the 2nd Battalion to India in December 1895, and served on the Punjab Frontier with the Mohmand Field Force under Major-General E. R. Elles from 10 June 1897 until 6 April 1898. Returning home via a year in South Africa, he was discharged in July 1908 after 15 years and 185 days’ service. On the outbreak of the Great War he re-enlisted in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders on 28 August 1914. He served throughout the War at home, and was discharged on 30 April 1920, his conduct being that of a ‘habitual drunk.’
