Afghanistan 1878-80, 2 clasps, Ahmed Khel, Kandahar (1026 Corpl. W. Quinn, 2/60th Foot) contact marks and pitting from Star, nearly very fine £240-280

William Quinn was born at Wapping, London, in October 1848 and attested for the 60th (King’s Royal Rifle Corps) Regiment of Foot as a Boy Soldier at Westminster in October 1862. Posted overseas to India with the 2nd Battalion in September 1867, upon reaching his 18th birthday. Promoted Corporal on 28 February 1878, he served during the Second Afghan War, and was present at the Battles of Ahmed Khel, 19 April 1880, and Kandahar, 1 September 1880, having in between taken part in Lord Robert’s famous march from Kabul to Kandahar (entitled to Star). In January 1881 he went to South Africa, and took part in the First Boer War, before returning home in November of that year. Transferring with the rank of Sergeant to the 3rd Militia Battalion, Hampshire Regiment, he was promoted to Sergeant and Instructor of Musketry on 22 July 1885, and was discharged on 10 November 1888 after 22 years and 25 days’ service.
