India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, N.E. Frontier 1891 (4142 Pte. W. Ross 4th. Bn. K.R. Rif. C.) suspension claw re-affixed with excess solder, very fine £120-150

Henry Robert Craven (alias William Ross) was born in Marylebone, Middlesex, in 1867 and attested for the Middlesex Regiment in November 1885, having previously served in the 4th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment (Reserve). He deserted on 14 November 1886, and re-enlisted under the alias of William Ross into the King’s Royal Rifle Corps on 4 May 1887. He claimed the benefit of the Queen’s Pardon, confessing to having deserted from the Middlesex Regiment, 30 June 1887, and was posted to the 4th Battalion for service in India in December 1888. He took part in the Manipur Expedition as part of the Tammu Column on the North East Frontier, March to May 1891, before returning home in December 1892. Transferring to the Army Reserve in May 1894, he was finally discharged in May 1899, after 12 years’ service with the K.R.R.C.
