John Bateman was born in Brighton, Sussex, in 1857 and attested for the Hampshire Regiment at Winchester in November 1882. He served with the 2nd Battalion in India from September 1883, and took part in the Third Anglo-Burmese War, being struck down with dysentery whilst in Mandalay. He transferred to the Army Reserve in July 1888, and was discharged in November 1894, after 12 years’ service.
