John McBirnie served with the 93rd (Sutherland) Highlanders during the Indian Mutiny and was severely wounded at the final recapture of Lucknow, 21 March 1858 (entitled to Indian Mutiny Medal with clasps Relief of Lucknow and Lucknow). He subsequently retired to the Cricklow Royal Institution, Dumfries.
