Thomas Stewart was born in Neilston, Renfrewshire, in 1832 and attested for the 78th (Highland) Regiment of Foot in March 1851. Promoted Corporal in January 1860, and Sergeant in April 1863, he was awarded his Long Service & Good Conduct Medal, together with a gratuity of £5, on 9 August 1870, and discharged in May of the following year, after 21 years and 61 days’ service.
